Hearing Our Students

I wonder what would happen if we allowed our students to carry on being heard in their schooling days. To think for themselves rather than herded into restrictive corridors of learning, with the aim of passing a set of standards instead of an outcome of critical thinking, and the challenges of living in a forever moving landscape.

I remember how in my school days I was told how as a child I was very shy, and timid child and this went into my teens. Today I would be given the label of the anxious child or/and one suffering from anxiety. I understand this became really bad when I had to go school, answering questions in front of class and of course exams! This then went on into my adulthood. I lacked self-confidence and found it difficult to express my thoughts.

Learning in those days was very prescriptive and restrictive. Has this improved? Witnessing the support my children have had I would answer yes. But this has been in order to get them through the exam structure, and to University. The pressure on going to University is far greater today then it was in my day.

I still believe children are not allowed to develop free thought. Critical thinking is definitely encouraged but for what purpose.

The pressure our latest generation is under, is immense and in such a way I never experienced. The continue bombardment of information and comparison to everyone else with the inability to escape from social media and 24/7 demands just isn’t possible.

I wish I had the answer. Self-reflection, human connection and respect for each others thinking and being non-judgmental would help. But how will this be learnt or taught.
